Details: Peter Gabriel hit #1 on the chart dated July 26, 1986, and the song he dethroned was "Invisible Touch" by Genesis, the band he left a decade earlier. The Aardman claymation video went on to win a record nine MTV Video Music Awards.

Opponent: Pedro Delgado
Result: Roche won by 40 seconds, the closest Tour margin to that point
Details: Roche became the first and still only Irish winner of the Tour. He won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the World Championship that year, a Triple Crown only Eddy Merckx had ever achieved.
