Note: Run-DMC hosted the pilot, Fab 5 Freddy took over from there, and Eric B. & Rakim's "Follow the Leader" was the first video the show ever played. MTV had spent most of the decade being accused of ignoring Black artists; the pilot became one of the highest-rated programs in the network's history to that point, and the weekly slot turned into a daily one inside a year.
