TODAY IN 80S MUSIC

80s Music Released on August 29th

1987 - "La Bamba" Was #1 in America

Artist: Los Lobos
Note: Three weeks at the top for a song sung entirely in Spanish — only the second ever to top the Hot 100 — from the Ritchie Valens biopic. Valens' original had peaked at 22.

1989 - Steel Wheels

Artist: The Rolling Stones (21st Album)
Billboard Charts: #3
Note: The reconciliation record after Mick and Keith spent most of the decade at war. The tour that followed was the highest-grossing in history to that point, and opened in Philadelphia two days later. "Mixed Emotions" was the lead single.

1980 - Signing Off

Artist: UB40 (Debut Album)
UK Charts: #2
Note: Named after a British unemployment benefit form, recorded in a bedsit in Birmingham, and it stayed on the UK chart for over a year. "Food for Thought" had already made them the first band to reach the UK top five on an independent label.

1989 - Sleeping with the Past

Artist: Elton John (22nd Album)
Billboard Charts: #23
Note: Newly sober and dedicated to Bernie Taupin. "Sacrifice" eventually gave Elton his first solo UK #1, eighteen years into his career.
